Today the president of Ukraine will speak at the commemorations of the Normandy landings while Vladimir Putin and Russia, uninvited, will be absent. Furthermore, tomorrow Zelensky will be at the Elysée with Macron and will speak in front of the French Parliament, Saturday will be Biden’s first state visit to France. But the commemorations of the landing will be the opportunity for a bilateral meeting between the two leaders, American and Ukrainian, before meeting again next week in Puglia, at the G7 in Borgo Egnazia, to take stock of the war and the supplies of weapons to Kiev to defend themselves from Russian aggression.
Furthermore, the American president has already made it known that he will not be at the Peace Conference in Switzerland on 15 and 16 June (he will be represented by Kamala Harris), while the Elysée has recently confirmed Macron’s participation to reiterate military support to Ukraine «in the long term» and the «political and diplomatic» one. Support that will translate already on Friday at the Elysée in the signing of two agreements for 650 million euros, between loans and donations, in favor above all of Ukraine’s “administrative capacities” and its critical infrastructures, particularly energy ones, which are constantly targeted from the Moscow raids.
On the opposite front, Putin claimed that “there is no plan to attack NATO countries” and that if the United States stops supplying weapons to Ukraine, “the conflict will end within two or a maximum of three months.” The nuclear threat is always present: «We have a nuclear doctrine that says that if someone’s actions threaten our sovereignty and territorial integrity, we believe it is possible to use all the means at our disposal». In a press conference with the international press, he also responded to a question from Ansa about Italy: “We see that Italy’s position towards Russia is more contained than other European countries and we evaluate this appropriately.” And then: «Caveman Russophobia is not widespread in Italy and we take this into consideration. We hope that when the situation regarding Ukraine begins to stabilize, we will be able to re-establish relations with Italy perhaps even faster than with some other countries.”
