The prosecutor is seeking a 13-year prison sentence for Navalny.
Russian a court has found Russia’s imprisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalnyin guilty of large-scale fraud, according to Reuters.
The Russian prosecutor’s office is working to transfer Navalny to the highest security prison for 13 years. The opposition leader, known as a vocal critic of the Kremlin, is accused of fraud and contempt of court.
Information about the punishment is expected to be reported later on Tuesday, according to Reuters.
Navalnyi is currently serving a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence in a prison east of Moscow.
Navalnyin the previous conditional sentence was commuted in February 2021 to an absolute custodial sentence because Navalny was found to have violated the rules of his probation.
Navalnyi was being treated in Germany after being poisoned in August 2020. Symptoms of the poisoning were observed on a flight from Tomsk to Moscow. When he returned to Russia in March 2021, he was immediately arrested.
According to the judge, Navalnyi had “knowingly evaded” parole supervision and failed to say “where he was in Germany”. According to the Russian Interior Ministry, Navalny was not poisoned but had contracted pancreatitis.
The European Court of Human Rights (EIT) and several human rights organizations have already condemned Navalny’s initial sentence. The EIT has called the punishment arbitrary and unjustified.
