Russia opened a criminal case for international terrorism on Wednesday due to leaks detected in Russian Nord Stream gas pipelines and Nord Stream 2 in the waters of the Baltic Sea.
The Russian Prosecutor’s Office denounced in a statement that “no later than September 26, in the vicinity of the island of Bornholm, intentional actions were committed aimed at damaging the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines.”

“As a result of these actions, the Russian Federation has suffered considerable economic damage,” he stressed.
These acts correspond to article 361 of the Russian criminal code (act of international terrorism), according to an official note. “A preliminary investigation has already started,” he added.
The investigations into the three leaks, which occurred in international waters -two in the Danish exclusive economic zone and one in the Swedish-, will be carried out by the investigation department of the Federal Security Service (FSB).

For that reason, Russia requested this Wednesday a session of the UN Security Council, which will be held this Friday, diplomatic sources at the United Nations informed Efe.
The operator of the Nord Stream gas pipeline indicated this Wednesday that everything suggests that “physical damage” has occurred in the energy infrastructure, and assured that it has begun to mobilize all the necessary resources to study the causes of the incident.
Sweden, Denmark, Germany, the European Union (EU) and NATO claim that the leaks are caused by an “intentional act” and “sabotage”.

As a result of such actions, the Russian Federation has suffered considerable economic damage
The Kremlin called European accusations that Russia could be behind the damage detected in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines “foolish and absurd”.
The first Nord Stream, with a pumping capacity of 55,000 million cubic meters of gas per year, is stopped after Russia alleges an oil leak in the only Russian compressor station that was still in operation.
And Nord Stream 2 never became operational due to Berlin’s blockade of the infrastructure even before the start of the Russian military campaign in Ukraine in February.
However, both pipelines are filled with gas and must therefore maintain a stable pressure.
