Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said on Saturday that the military exercises conducted by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) over a period of four months near Russia’s borders are evidence that the alliance is preparing for a possible conflict with it.
Zakharova added, in a statement, that NATO is waging a war against Russia in various ways by supporting Ukraine with weapons, intelligence information, and financing.
“At the moment, the largest NATO exercise since the Cold War is taking place near Russia’s borders,” she said. “According to their scenario, the coalition’s actions against Russia are being rehearsed using all tools, including hybrid and conventional weapons.”
She added, “We must acknowledge that NATO is seriously preparing for a possible conflict with us.”
When it announced the start of the maneuvers last January, the alliance said that 90,000 soldiers would participate in training on how American forces could support European allies in the countries bordering Russia and on the eastern side of the alliance if a conflict broke out.
Russia said at the time that the exercises represented an “irreversible return” for the alliance to its Cold War plans.
The exercise, the largest NATO exercise since the Cold War, is scheduled to conclude this month of May.
