Russian authorities announced on Monday that they had evacuated hundreds of people from the border city of Belgourd due to Ukrainian bombing.
Russia transferred about 300 people from the city in the largest evacuation from a large Russian city since the outbreak of the current Ukrainian crisis in February 2022.
The Ukrainian army carried out a series of strikes targeting Belgorod, located less than 32 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
About 300 people who decided to leave are currently residing in temporary housing in the towns of Stary Oskol and Gubkin in the Korochansky region, farthest from the border, according to Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of the Belgord region.
“In the past 24 hours, we have received 1,300 requests to send Belgorod children to school camps far from the city in other regions,” Gladkov added.
Last December 30, a Ukrainian bombing of the city killed 25 people, forcing schools to close their doors for a long period.
