MFA: Russia considers it impossible to terminate the UN Arctic Convention
Moscow considers it impossible to terminate the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in the Arctic. About it RIA News said Director of the Legal Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maxim Musikhin.
He commented on allegations that appeared in the media that Russia, in order to protect its national interests, may reconsider its participation in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in the Arctic. The diplomat emphasized that it is impossible to terminate the implementation of the provisions of the Convention from the point of view of the law of international treaties, since many provisions that form, in particular, the basis of the legal regime for the use of the Northern Sea Route, are based on the norms of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
On May 22, Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen announced that Russia had announced its intention to review the definition of maritime zones in the Gulf of Finland. “The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea contains provisions on the definition of maritime zones of coastal states, including their revision. We assume that Russia, as a party to the Convention, will act accordingly,” the diplomat said. She also added that such intentions of Russia are allegedly an act of hybrid influence.
