Russia and Ukraine agreed on the format of humanitarian corridors

During the second round of negotiations, Moscow and Kyiv discussed the format of the regime for maintaining humanitarian corridors for the withdrawal of the civilian population, as well as a possible cessation of hostilities while the residents were evacuated. This was announced on March 3 by the head of the Russian delegation, ex-Minister of Culture of Russia Vladimir Medinsky.

The main issue that was resolved today is the rescue of people, civilians, who found themselves in the zone of military clashes.“, he noted.

Medinsky clarified that this issue is significant.

Russia and Ukraine will continue negotiations in the third round in the near future, the head of the Russian delegation added.

Earlier Thursday, the second round of talks between Russia and Ukraine ended in Belovezhskaya Pushcha.

The sides outlined their positions and priorities even before the talks.

The requirements of the Ukrainian side were voiced by Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the presidential office. He stated that the Ukrainian delegation insists on three points: an immediate ceasefire, a truce and humanitarian corridors for the removal of civilians. However, I am ready to discuss other issues.

Medinsky spoke about the plans of the Russian side for the second round of negotiations. He stated that the block of proposals of Russia concerns three aspects – military-technical, humanitarian and political.

The composition of the delegations at the second round of negotiations has not changed.

On February 28, the first stage of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine took place in the Gomel region. The meeting lasted about five hours, the parties went through all the items on the agenda in detail and agreed to continue the negotiation process.

The situation in Donbass escalated on February 17, 2022. In the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), heavy shelling by Ukrainian security forces, including from heavy weapons, was reported. The republics announced a general mobilization, the evacuation of civilians to the territory of Russia, and also asked to recognize their independence. On February 21, the President of the Russian Federation signed decrees recognizing their sovereignty.

On February 24, the Russian leader announced the launch of a special operation of the Russian Federation in Ukraine, calling its goal the protection of the civilian population of Donbass, the denationalization and demilitarization of the country.
