It’s been a year and 11 months since George Russell he didn’t win one pole position. The only one from his career so far had arrived in Hungary, in Budapest in 2022. The reply arrived today, in Montreal after a literally last thousandth challenge with Max Verstappen. In the end, the Mercedes representative set the same time, one thousandth, as the three-time world champion. However, having had him register first, it was his turn to start from the post.
The essence of racing
A special joy that Russell tried to describe in words to the microphones of Sky Sports F1 at the end of the day: “For me this is the essence of racing: I’ve spent my whole life competing for wins and pole positions and the adrenaline that these things give you is incomparable to anything else I’ve felt in life. I haven’t felt this feeling in a long time. When you know that all your work translates into a result like this it fills you with great emotions”.
Albon’s wake and the thrill of Q3
In such an incredibly balanced challenge everything, obviously, can help. A little involuntary help to Russell perhaps came from his friend Alex Albon, who gave him a slipstream, but Russell even has some complaints about his Q3: “Maybe Albon helped me partly with the trail, though my last lap in Q3 wasn’t so good. I did my fastest lap on used tires and my fastest lap overall was in Q2. I felt good, I thought I had even more potential and the same goes for Lewis, who set the fastest lap in Q2. We were lucky to get pole, but looking at the pace I probably could have been 3-4 tenths ahead. I’m clearly delighted to have achieved pole but we need to understand what happened in Q3“, he concluded.
