State Civil Defense balance includes food, hygiene and cleaning products and clothing; were distributed in 167 cities
Rio Grande do Sul has already received 3.375 million items through donations due to the floods that have hit the state since the end of April. The numbers include, among other items, food, hygiene and cleaning products and clothing and are part of a survey of the Civil defense of the State that accounted for donations received and distributed.
According to the survey, the products were distributed in 167 municipalities, from April 25th to May 25th.
Authorities warn, however, of the natural drop in donations as the acute phase of the tragedy passes and ask that people continue to donate, as those affected will take time to recover.
According to the balance sheet, the following were donated during the period:
- 1.5 million liters of drinking water;
- 202.2 tons of various foods;
- 166,076 basic food baskets;
- 136 thousand liters of milk;
- 98,000 blankets;
- 24,000 mattresses;
- 244 thousand kits hygiene and cleaning;
- 62,000 bags of animal feed;
- 42,000 diapers;
- 364 thousand kits with clothes.
In parallel, the Mail reported having transported more than 15,000 tons of donations. The state-owned company receives the items at its agencies throughout Brazil and provides free transportation to Rio Grande do Sul. The company expects to transport 500 tons of donations per day to the people of Rio Grande do Sul.
At this stage, the guidance is to donate, in order of priority:
- water and basic food items (check the expiration date of all items and do not donate if they are expired or close to expiration date);
- pet food;
- personal hygiene items (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, absorbent pads, toilet paper and children’s and geriatric diapers);
- cleaning items (bar soap, trash bags, cleaning cloths, gloves, cleaning brush and sponges).
Clothing donations are currently discouraged.
Find out the guidelines to facilitate the screening of donations:
- basic food baskets must be delivered unopened or with the food in transparent bags;
- Ideally, personal hygiene items should also be delivered already assembled in kitsin transparent bags;
- separate items into categories and place them in boxes or bags that can be closed/tied;
- Place in boxes or bags with good sealing, taking care to avoid tears or holes.
