It remains mercilessly dry in Italy. Another major fire breaks out in Rome as the next heatwave sweeps across Mediterranean countries.
Munich/Rome – It’s hot. It is dry. And it just doesn’t want to rain. The extremely dry weather, which at first sounds like a holiday in midsummer, continues to hit Italy hard. In the Italian capital Rome, for example, another major fire with forest fires broke out in a park after fires in the west of the city had kept the fire brigades of the metropolis with its around 2.9 million inhabitants on their toes at the beginning of the week.
Heat and drought in Italy: forest fires and major fires are affecting Rome
Like the portal daswetter.com writes, this time the flames spread in the north-west of the city, in the areas of Pineta Sacchetti and Monte Mario up to the Balduina district. The fire devastated the Pineto Regional Park, one of the city’s nature reserves. Earlier this week there was a fire a little further east on Monte Mario, from which you have an impressive view of the historic city centre. In a post on Twitter, a video can be seen that is supposed to show Monday’s inferno – in the middle of the city.
In addition to Rome, the highest forest fire warning level also applies to the holiday island of Sicily. According to civil protection, firefighting aircraft have already been requested here, as well as occasionally in the Lazio region, which surrounds the capital Rome.
Further requests for support against forest fires came from the southern Italian regions of Calabria and Apulia and from northeastern Veneto on the Adriatic coast. An end to the drought is not in sight, according to the portal wetter.de the next heat wave is already rolling towards Spain with the Balearic Islands of Mallorca and Ibiza, towards Italy and the other Mediterranean countries in Europe, such as Croatia.
Heat and drought in Italy: “Southern Europe will probably be cooked in the coming weeks”
“Southern Europe will probably be cooked in the coming weeks. From Portugal to Spain, Italy to the Balkans, maximum values of around 40 degrees are threatening for a few days, maybe even weeks, with peaks between 45 and 50 degrees. The latter is a record level for Europe! Above all, the length of the possible heat, coupled with the already extreme drought, will cause major problems,” explained wetter.de-Meteorologist Paul Heger.
While drinking water in Italy is becoming increasingly scarce due to the drought in Italy and agriculture is complaining, there is still no rain in sight. Noisy weather.com the chance of rain in Rome is constantly zero percent in the coming days. (pm)
