Interviewed by EurogamerStefano Corazza, the head of Roblox Studio, rejected the idea that Roblox long live of exploitation of child laborstating on the contrary that it is a big one gift for young developers, especially those in difficult conditions.
As you know, Roblox offers users a real development environment, with integrated tools, which allows them to create their own games within Roblox and upload them, sharing them with other users. If desired, you can make them accessible for free or monetize them. The platform obviously takes a large cut for each transaction. Hence the accusation of exploiting the work of very young developers to make money, with what appears to be a kind of Ponzi scheme.
Exploitation?
The fact that Roblox profits from the work of young developers is a Done, since it actually profits from the work of young developers when they sell their work. According to Corazza, however, the situation must be looked at from another point of view, that is, the entire system must be considered as a big gift: “You can say that we are exploiting child labor, or you can say that we are offering people all over the world the possibility of having a job and also income.”
The argument here becomes a little controversial: “So I can be a 15-year-old Indonesian living in a slum and now, with just a laptop, I can create something and make money to support myself,” which is in fact the exact description of the system from which Child exploitation arises in almost every area.
Corazza then explained that the majority of Roblox developers are in their twenties, although he is aware that there are also very young people, who in any case, according to him, do not feel exploited: “According to their experience, they do not feel exploited. They feel as if it had been done to him the greatest of gifts where they can create something and reach millions of users, making so much money they can retire.”
So he says it's more important to focus on the amount of money Roblox gives out to creators, a figure that has reached nearly $1 billion, than on the accusations being leveled at the company about how it produces billions of dollars in revenue each year.
