Rivian is getting closer and closer to one of the crucial moments for its long-term survival. It is about the production of electric vans for deliveries, which will specifically go to a global customer such as Amazon. The company founded by Jeff Bezos has ordered 100,000 electric vehicles by 2025 to equip themselves with lower-emission mobility, and has entrusted this goal to a company that only started the assembly line last September (thanks to its line of pickups and SUVs).
According to an online forum dedicated to Rivian owners (frequented, for now, more by people who have ordered the vehicles without being able to drive them yet), the names of the vans have already been chosen. Nothing extraordinary, for Rivian: they should be called, according to a document filed with the NHTSA body, 700 Van and 500 Van. The name derives from the load capacity of the two types of vans that will be produced. The Rivian 500 Van will be available in both drive configurations, left and right, making it available in major markets such as the UK and Australia. In the future there should also be space for a ‘900 Van’ version, using the same naming style.
In the same documents Rivian lists the types of ‘engines’ and traction: single engine and front-wheel drive; double engine; and four-wheel drive and single engine. There should be two initial setups: Z version for Amazon, S for other customers. Another sign that the agreement with the e-commerce giant is really fundamental for the company’s fortunes: the first deliveries, according to the latest projections, should start in 2022, with production starting in December of this year. It will be necessary to verify these dates, in a few weeks, in light of the semiconductor crisis that has impacted all manufacturers and which should not be avoidable even by Rivian.
