The Mini Clubman is dead, marking the end of the not-so-mini Mini with goofy rear doors. Today the brand is showing the last copy ever. Since its birth in 1969, 1.1 million units of the Mini Clubman have been built. Half of them were really mini, because according to Mini 550,000 'modern' versions were built.
The fact that Mini is discontinuing the Clubman comes as no surprise. At the end of last year, Mini boss Stephanie Wurst told Top Gear that there was no more room for the Clubman thanks to the arrival of the Aceman and the success of the Countryman. “If you look at global sales figures, twice as many Countrymans are sold as Clubmans,” Wurst said.
The Mini Clubman was created from a merger of Minis
Mini's discontinuation of the Clubman marks the end of a line of cars that goes all the way back to the early 1960s, when BMC showed a few station wagons derived from the original Mini. The two, along with some other Mini variants, came together in one car in 1969: the Mini Clubman. From there, the Clubman grew in power and, of course, size.
Approximately 600,000 original Clubmans rolled out of the factory until 1982. BMW brought the model back to life in 2007 as a special station wagon. He only got an extra door on one side, which also opened in the 'wrong direction'. The tailgate did not go up, but those were also two opening doors.
The current generation had two doors per side. A little less special, but a little more practical. The special doors on the back remained. These doors are now closed for the last time. Are you going to miss them?
