Here’s the ‘Hedgehog’ again
The Canadian Grand Prix saw the rebirth – at least for one weekend – of Daniel Ricciardo. The Australian from Racing Bulls was one of the positive protagonists of the weekend, taking a splendid fifth place in qualifying and a good eighth place on Sundaywhich allowed him to move up the rankings and rise to nine points gained in as many GPs.
The Honey Badger’s eighth-place finish came despite a five-second penalty imposed on him by the stewards for a controversial false start. Ricciardo actually experienced a terrible first lap, in which he fell from fifth to eighth place. The commissioners, however, noticed a movement, very slight but actually visible via the camerasaccomplished by Perth’s #3 before the lights go out.
What a joke to begin with
It is not clear whether the transponder detected the maneuver, but Unfortunately for Ricciardo the regulations in this regard have changed in recent weeks and a sort of was introduced ‘television test’ which allows the commissioners to sanction any anticipated movements even if not detected by the IT equipment.
The same stewards, in the document with which the former Renault and McLaren driver was penalized by five seconds, recognized how “the movement was very slight and no significant sporting advantage was obtained”. The sanction, however, was inevitable, although it was decided “the least severe penalty applicable to such infringement“. Ricciardo, curiously, finished the race exactly five seconds behind seventh place, occupied by Lance Stroll.
