Following in the footsteps of Jair Bolsonaro, former Environment Minister Ricardo Salles joined Valdemar Costa Neto’s Liberal Party and is expected to run for a seat in the Chamber of Deputies for São Paulo.
The party bets heavily on the former minister. According to the National Directorate of the PL, Salles is expected to be one of the most voted deputies in this election.
Salles follows a wave of people close to the president who have been announcing their affiliations to the PL.
Examples are federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PSL-SP), the special secretary for Culture, Mário Frias, the secretary for Education Management and Health Work at the Ministry of Health, Mayra Pinheiro (known as “Captain Chloroquine”), and the director general of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin), Alexandre Ramagem. The four also signaled interest in seats in the Chamber.
Under study
Ricardo Salles was dismissed from the Ministry of the Environment in June 2021, amid investigations in the STF that accused him of defending the private interest of illegal loggers and hampering a federal investigation.
With the end of the special forum of Salles, the case left the Supreme Court and remains under the responsibility of the Federal Police of Pará.
