‘Reyitos’ declares herself a woman and is now the virtual mayor of Venado, San Luis Potosí

Throughout Mexico There were historic elections, since the first virtual one was elected president of the country. At the same time, changes were made in the municipal governments throughout the national territory, such as San Luis Potosi.

In this state, José Reyes Martínez Rojas, popularly known as “Reyitos“, HE He declared himself a woman and won the mayoralty from the municipality of Venado, San Luis Potosí.

This event marks an unprecedented event in the history of the entity and represents significant progress in the inclusion and representation of the LGBT community in public positions.

José Reyes Martínez Rojas, under the emblem of the Green Environmental Party of Mexico (PVEM), became the virtual municipal president of Venado after defeating Ignacio Martínez Carlos, candidate of the Nueva Alianza party, by 791 votes.

During the electoral campaign, “Reyitos” faced various questions about her gender identity, since she declared herself a woman.

The Electoral Law of San Luis Potosí, which allows gender self-assignment, was important for the validation of his candidacy by the State Electoral and Citizen Participation Council (Ceepac).

The resolution of the State Electoral Tribunal (TEE) of San Luis Potosí reaffirmed the legitimacy of his nomination, rejecting the challenges presented against him.

The TEE highlighted the obligation of electoral authorities to respect gender self-assignment, based on sexual diversity guidelines.

Reactions and perspectives to Reyitos’ victory

The triumph of “Reyitos” has generated various reactions. On the one hand, it is celebrated as a great step in the inclusion and representation of people from the LGBT community in politics.

On the other hand, he has faced criticism and controversy, especially from groups that question the legitimacy of his gender self-ascription. Despite criticism, “Reyitos” has defended its position, arguing that sexual diversity must be recognized and respected in all its forms.
