AOC U28G2XU2 recently fell into my hands. It is one of the many gaming monitors produced by AOC, a company that over time has made a real name for itself with regard to the sale of these essential peripherals for every gamer. Anyway, after having had the product in my hands for some time, it’s finally time to tell you about it. Will I have liked it? Will it have met my expectations? Let’s find out together in our full review!
Unboxing and features
AOC U28G2XU2 is presented with great fanfare in the classic box that AOC dedicates to its products. A classic packaging, which prevents the shocks that may occur during transport from damaging the product. Below I leave you the complete list of components in the package:
In case you are interested, I leave you a direct reference to the product here

Much more important are certainly the roundup of technical information that I am about to bring you, as this monitor is truly a gaming giant. First we have one gorgeous 28-inch panel IPS with maximum resolution UHD (3840×2160). All topped off with a truly exceptional anti-reflection treatment. The format is the classic 16:9, while we have a maximum refresh rate of 144Hzwith a response time of 1ms. If that’s not enough to make your eyes sparkle, let’s move on to the rear which boasts:
- 2x HDMI 2.0
- 2x DisplayPort 1.4
There are also built-in speakers and HDR! But how will the product behave in the practical side? Let’s see it now.
AOC U28G2XU2: uncompromising quality, or almost!
No doubt the fact that you have in your hands a high level product it is tangible from the moment of ignition. Before even talking to you about the visual quality, however, I want to bring you an interesting dynamic relating to the monitor stand. AOC U28G2XU2 is fully adjustable in height and inclination, even making a turn of 180 degrees (interesting factor for business use or particular game situations, or even for programming!).
The installation is pure user-friendly, it is a question of screwing in a screw and matching the monitor with its coupling mechanism on the stand. As usual, AOC is very attentive to this side of its products and as we have told you in many other reviews, the monitor adjustment system works well and gives a lot of satisfaction. The only very small defect that I would like to point out again is the absence of some kind of “step” to understand when the monitor has reached its initial position, so that it can be restored to an upright position without the slightest problem.
Having said that, let’s get to practice. I had the opportunity to test several titles during my test of this monitor, of which I list a few: Marvel’s Spider-Man – Miles Morales, Gotham Knights, STAR WARS Battlefront II, Mortal Kombat 11… All have been tested at maximum resolution supported and high/ultra details, with ray tracing enabled where possible. The end result in each of these titles has been nothing short of impressive. By slightly adjusting the contrast, I was able to immerse myself in a gaming experience that left me very satisfied. The colors are right and vibrant and from the dark Gotham to the sunny Star Wars Scarif I could not help but enjoy every detail that this monitor manages to capture very well.
I have not encountered any particular visual defects except unfortunately a slight Backlight Bleeding visible in some situations of loading and black screen. I find myself forced to specify that it is however a defect very often present in this type of display and it is nothing excessively frustrating, indeed to tell the truth in normal use it is hardly noticeable. But it is still right to bring it back!
As for the‘HDRwe can certainly say that it is about the weakness of this product. Let’s be clear, nothing scandalous, everything is certified as VESA DisplayHDR 400, however, this is the level that we can define as “basic” for monitors that have HDR. In short, for the price of this product I expected at least an HDR 600.
A further criticism that I feel like making and which leads me to categorically advise against this monitor to console owners is theabsence of HDMI 2.1. The result of this choice is the impossibility of playing at more than 60Hz for Sony and Microsoft users. Obviously this problem does not arise for PC users who will be able to use the DisplayPort supplied with the monitor and enjoy it to its full potential.
Finally, a quick word on the audio sector of the product. As you well know, it is very difficult to find excellent audio speakers in a gaming monitor. If you are looking for a premium sound you will certainly have to aim for dedicated systems. Despite this, it is appreciable that this AOC U28G2XU2 brings with it the ability to reproduce audio. However, the quality is medium to low and for gaming sessions I would suggest a pair of headphones. For office use, however, the audio from the monitor is just fine.
Profiles and G-Menu to maximize the experience
If you are intending to buy an AOC monitor, absolutely go here and download G-Menu. It is a software that will allow you to adjust every single setting of your monitor without having to go crazy with the physical keys placed underneath it. Anyway, we’ll talk about G-Menu in detail in a moment. First I want to introduce you the 3 default profiles made available by the company:
- FPS: Entirely designed for anyone who loves first person shooters and will improve dark themes and black details.
- RTS: Will focus on improving picture quality
- Racing: as the name suggests is designed for racing lovers and will focus on giving you the fastest possible response times and will work a lot on color saturation.
We then additional profiles that you can personalize as you see fit so that you are ready for any game situation and beyond.
Now we come to G-Menu. Thanks to this software, it will be possible to interact with the monitor from the operating system itself: do you want to change monitor resolution or profile? No problem, just a few clicks. The possibilities are many and it is always a plus point to have a center where you can manage everything without going crazy with the small keys placed under the device.
