White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan revealed, on Tuesday, part of the content of US President Joe Biden’s speech to the United Nations General Assembly.
Sullivan announced that Biden intends to urge reform of the UN Security Council of the United Nations during his presence in New York.
The National Security Adviser said that Biden plans to raise this issue, whether in private meetings with the Secretary-General of the United Nations and other officials, or publicly.
“I expect the president to talk, substantively, on the issue of reforming the UN Security Council while he is in New York,” Sullivan told reporters.
The issue of Security Council reform often arises at every international crisis, with one of the five permanent members (the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France) vetoing resolutions supported by others.
“I think that’s going to be on the agenda, and you might see him (Biden) making a public statement,” Sullivan said. “The world can see that when a permanent member acts in this way, it touches the heart of the United Nations Security Council.”
In his presentation to the UN General Assembly, Biden will focus heavily on the crisis in Ukraine, according to Sullivan.
He noted that Biden “will address every country, and those who have joined our broad coalition to support Ukraine.”
Sullivan confirmed that Biden will announce investments to the US government to address global food insecurity, which has been exacerbated by the Ukraine crisis.
