You don't expect it, but Max Verstappen has won the 2024 Chinese GP. The Dutchman was once again supreme.
After 5 years, the Formula 1 circus returns to the Shanghai International Circuit. Last weekend it was already noticeable that the track was able to provide some surprises, if you do not count the enormous dominance of Red Bull.
Start
The start went quite smoothly. Max Verstappen drove away quite easily. The big surprise was Fernando Alonso. In the warm-up lap he was already warming up his tires and he took advantage of that. On the outside of the bend he passed Pérez and came close to Verstappen. The Dutch eventually drove away quite easily, but the overtaking action on the outside on Pérez was of great beauty.
Already on lap 14, both Red Bull drivers went into the pits to change their medium tires from hard tires. It shows a bit of the overcapacity of the team from Milton Keynes. Verstappen manages to increase the pace faster than his teammate, who is now finally doing what is required of him (simply finishing second).
Alpine already had a mediocre weekend, but it only got worse with Pierre Gasly's pit stop. This was so dramatic that we almost feel sorry for the French-British team.
Midrace
Hamilton climbs steadily to the top, despite a lot of complaining. Valtteri Bottas retires with engine problems. A shame, because the Finn had a great weekend in the Stake F1 Sauber dinges case. The Virtual Safety Car came out relatively late, Sainz and Stroll were in a fierce fight in the corner where Bottas was fixing his steering wheel. After a few laps a virtual safe car arrived.
Because the marshals could not get Bottas' car away, a 'full' safety car was deployed. And yes, that was still the old AMG GT R, not yet the new AMG GT S E-PERFORMANCE that was unveiled yesterday.
At the restart, things are not going well in midfield. Alonso braked, causing the rest to lose one brake check gets. Ultimately, it is Stroll who rides behind (the excellently performing) Ricciardo. Magnussen knocked Tsunoda out of the race, causing another safety car to come out. Lance gets a 10 second penalty for this kamikaze action:
Finish
Alonso drove on a different strategy than the rest in the top 10. Fernando went in for fresh mediums, while the rest simply drove on old hards.
Oh, and most importantly: Verstappen won the 2024 Chinese GP!
