A group of representatives from the Republican Party presented a bill over the weekend to force the government of United States President Joe Biden to send heavy weapons to Israel.
Last week, Biden was criticized by the Israeli government, the Republican opposition and even members of the Democratic Party for having suspended the shipment of a shipment of offensive weapons to Israel, citing concerns about his partner’s ground offensive in Rafah, a city in southern Israel. Gaza Strip.
In an interview with CNN, Biden claimed that American bombs killed civilians in the war against the terrorist group Hamas, which began on October 7, and said he would continue to withhold sending offensive weapons if Israel carried out the offensive in Rafah. Only defensive weapons, like those used in the Iron Dome, would be sent, the president added.
The Israelis began the operation in Rafah, but, according to international press reports, in a contained manner, precisely out of fear of the United States’ reaction.
“The House and Senate acted in accordance with the will of the people, overwhelmingly providing Israel [em referência a um pacote de ajuda militar aprovado no mês passado] the firepower to send a message: the United States and our allies will not be intimidated by terrorist organizations like Hamas”, justified the Republican deputies, in a message released when the bill was presented.
“The administration is expected to [Biden] Use the aid you requested to equip Israel with what it needs to defend itself, destroy Hamas, and maintain peace in the region. Any actions to withhold resources impede our national and global security and send a dangerous signal that the United States cannot be counted on as a partner,” the Republicans added.
The bill, which is expected to be voted on in the House of Representatives later this week, would require the US federal government to “expeditiously deliver approved defense articles and services to Israel” and would withhold funds from the Department of Defense, the Department of State and the Council of National Security until the delivery of weapons that had their shipment suspended, among other measures.
The presentation of the proposal was criticized by the White House. “We strongly oppose attempts to restrict the President’s ability to provide security assistance consistent with United States foreign policy and national security objectives,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in this Monday (13).
