Republic, formerly the Republican Society, seizes the eighteenth birthday of Crown Princess Amalia to discuss succession. “Every 18-year-old girl should be able to decide for herself what she wants with her life. Amalia too,” Republic chairman Floris Müller says in conversation with the ANP.
In the opinion of the Republic, succession does not fit in a free country. It is old-fashioned and contrary to equality, they say. Because recent polls by Ipsos also show that support for succession among the Dutch is decreasing, the association thinks it is high time that the subject was discussed in the House of Representatives. To achieve this, Republic recently started a campaign, Free Amalia.
Anyone who wants to can send a pre-printed letter on the subject to the responsible MPs of the various parties via the website of the republican association. About 10,000 letters have already been sent. The majority to GroenLinks,” says Müller.
ruining birthday
He wants to refute in advance that Müller and his association would ruin the crown princess’s birthday with their criticism. ,,I often hear: how can you burden such a girl with all your points? But I don’t care about her. I really hope she has a fantastic day. Nor do I focus on her personally, but on the limitation of her freedoms,” says Müller. “She was not even 18 years old and there was a discussion in our parliament about who she would like. And whether she gets permission to do so. With everyone else we would have said: are you honked, but because it is her that is possible.”
The fact that Amalia has to attend her first meeting of the Council of State the day after her eighteenth birthday is a thorn in Müller’s side. “Amalia should sleep off the day after her eighteenth birthday, instead of attending her first Council of State meeting,” said Müller. “She should be able to decide that for herself.”
