In the fall of 2019, a protest movement lit the streets of Iraq’s capital Baghdad and Shiite-dominated cities in the south of the country. The protesters highlighted fed up with widespread corruption and lack of job opportunities, but also the influence of neighboring Iran and its militias. The repression was extremely violent, leaving at least 600 dead and 21,000 injured in just a few months. The relatives of the victims still demand justice.
Meanwhile in Iraq, more and more voices accuse pro-Iranian armed groups of being behind a campaign of systematic violence.
Our reporters Jonathan Walsh and Amar Al Hameedawi met with the families of the victims and with activists now living in hiding.
