On Saturday afternoon, the axle came out in the tail unit of an empty train during a maneuver inside the tunnel that connects the high-speed stations of Puerta de Atocha and Chamartín.
After that train derailed, delays arose that caused crowds of travelers at the station, to which was added the presence of a man who entered an unauthorized access area and threatened to jump from a footbridge.
This caused the activation of the emergency protocol and the total shutdown of the tension at the station at 7:30 p.m., until that person was rescued at 9:20 p.m. and tension was restored on the railway line, before the gradual resumption of train traffic.
At the entrance to Atocha, a Alvia Alicante-Gijón, an Avant Toledo-Madrid, an Avant Madrid-Puertollano, an AVE Figueres-Madrid and an AVE Madrid-Seville, in addition to the suspension of service at previous stations of several Media Distancia and Cercanías trains.
