It is no longer difficult to guess the forms of Renault Austral, the next SUV of the Losanga. However, thanks to the ‘camo’ livery, the detailed lines in the various parts of the body are still unknownas well as the final design of the headlights, hood and grille. As Renault recalls, this is the phase in which the cars protagonists of the road tests are carefully covered with black and white stickers, with more or less psychedelic styles. The purpose is clear: to protect future models from prying eyes so that the official reveal remains a nice surprise.
Camouflage hides or deforms the distinctive lines and design elements characteristic of the new models, often focusing on the grille, edges of the fenders, bonnet and headlights, up to the brand logo. There are two camouflage techniques commonly used by car manufacturers: the false filling or false volumes to hide the “true” forms; stickering or covering, to cover the bodywork with a second adhesive skin.
The inspiration even comes from the First World War: Anglo-Saxon warships then used camouflage known as dazzle or razzle dazzle. In practice, the boats were completely covered in very graphic shapes, only in black and white. The goal of this strong contrast was to break perspective, reflections and light. The Renault team worked with the brand’s new codes and above all with the emblem. In fact, the iconic lozenge has lent itself well to playing with lines, and an evocative style has been created with the variations of scale.
Far from being a standard full-face adhesive, the New Austral’s second skin has been tailor-made for every single part of the bodywork. The pattern, smaller at the front, gets bigger at the rear, accentuating the movement. The overlaps are essentially concentrated in the rear quarter area, a point where the vehicle design acquires maximum expressiveness. The grille and the luminous signatures, especially at the rear, have also been camouflaged. The collage, made piece by piece like a puzzle, required a very meticulous work in order not to damage the bodyworkboth in the cutting phase and in the application of the stickers.
