The Senate rejected with 26 votes in favour, 112 against and 3 abstentions, the League's amendment for the introduction of the third mandate for regional presidents. The speaker had expressed an opinion against the law, the government had deferred to the Chamber. “The debate is not closed. We are interpreting the will of citizens and voters in the most correct way”, said Lega senator Paolo Tosato in his explanation of vote.
There were two amendments that proposed a third mandate for the governors, one from the League and one from IV, which however were voted on in a single ballot, being almost identical. Lega and Iv, c. therefore voted in favouragainst FdI, FI, Pd, M5s and Avs, while the Svp abstained.
Despite the attempt to play down the split within the majority, this is a delicate and painful transition for the centre-right. The League presented the amendment to allow Luca Zaia to re-present himself as president of Veneto in 2025, but Fratelli d'Italia and Forza Italia voted against. On the other hand, Giorgia Meloni wants the leadership of Veneto for FdI. There was also tension in the Democratic Party which voted against but the governors and many Dem mayors were in favour.
The clash in the centre-right over the third mandate anticipated in the morning above Affaritaliani.it
The centre-right majority is split, once again, over the third mandate for the regional governors. This time not in the Commission but directly in the Senate. From Fratelli d'Italia and Forza Italia no to the League which is not taking any steps backwards on the rule that would allow Luca Zaia to run again in 2025 for the presidency of the Veneto region (which however Giorgia Meloni wants for Fratelli d'Italia).
“I would say not at all.” With these words the leader of the League in the Senate Massimiliano Romeo answers the question of Affaritaliani.it if the party led by Matteo Salvini withdraws the amendment on the third mandate of the regional presidents presented in the Senate on the elections decree.
“If the League does not withdraw the amendment, which we hope for, Fratelli d'Italia will vote against”. As Raffaele Speranzondeputy group leader in the Senate of FdI confirms CEO Affaritaliani.it that today in the Senate the party of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will vote against the League's amendment on the third mandate for regional presidents. “They know very well the negative outcome of this battle, but evidently they want to plant a flag to manage internal pressure within the League in Veneto. Is it right for them to increase the limit of mandates? Not for us. Everyone here. Parliament is sovereign and a decision will be made in the Chamber. Then, once this brief distraction on a topic that impacts the future of three or four people in Italy is over, we will return together to work on the reforms that are of interest to all Italians”, he concludes.
“We are not changing our position. We are against it and we are voting against it.” The leader of Forza Italia in the Senate Maurizio Gasparri confirm ad Affaritaliani.it that today in the Senate the party of deputy prime minister Antonio Tajani will vote against the League's amendment on the third mandate for regional presidents. “There is nothing scandalous, everyone has their own position. I really don't think the amendment will pass but there will be no tragedies. The government is not based on this issue which frankly doesn't worry me that much. We also talked about it with Romeo, relations are cordial. It is legitimate to have different positions, but it is not a topic that can absolutely disturb relations within the majority”, he concludes.
