A new study associates coffee consumption with a lower risk of heart and respiratory diseases, strokes, some types of cancer, diabetes, dementia and depression. The research has been published in the journal Aging Research Reviews.
Coffee can have multiple healthy effects, say the researchers who authored the study, from the University of Coimbra (Portugal)including increasing resistance to stress.
Researchers analyzed all the available data on coffee and its effects on people and produced the first analysis of the impact of coffee and its compounds in aging.
The results show that regular coffee consumption is associated with 1.84 more years of lifeas well as with a lower risk of suffering from most diseases associated with advancing age.
According to researchers, coffee contains more than 2,000 compounds. Some have anti-inflammatory effects, while others act as antioxidants, and both types can have an impact on disease and life expectancy.
The coffee has particularly high levels of caffeine and chlorogenic acids, which have been found to protect against cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and inflammation-related conditions.
Chlorogenic acid has also been linked to anxiety and stressand has been suggested as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The researchers wrote in their conclusions that “coffee should be enjoyed as a treasure of benefits designed for the golden years”.
