There Red Bull is celebrating the victory obtained in the United States Grand Prix at the hands of an excellent performance by Max Verstappen, but at the same time continues his battle with the Mercedes even off the track. Specifically, according to what emerged and reported by the German newspaper Auto Motor und Sport, the same Austrian team would have made a request to the FIA to ensure that the latter verifies the effective legality of the rear suspension of the German single-seaters. In particular, the team principal Christian Horner referred to the presence of a suspect “Straight line device” which would allow the lowering of the rear of the W12, such as to guarantee an increase in speed to the Silver Arrows. A system that would have favored Mercedes especially in the previous appointment in Turkey, where Valtteri Bottas triumphed on the Istanbul circuit.
The same Austrian house has defined “Inconclusive” the investigations of the International Federation, even citing others seven teams that exploit this mechanism, and in some cases even more radically than Mercedes. In this regard, the report also includes Ferrari, which would have recognized and admitted the use of this tool in its set-up for several seasons, as well as for the three-pointed star. Horner also explained why this tool was less effective in Austin than other events such as those in Turkey and Sochi, Russia, when the winners were instead Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton: “The advantage varies depending on the track – the English manager analyzed – and on the Circuit of the Americas the effect is reduced. There are a lot of fast corners here, so you can’t lower the rear end without losing downforce. They could not have benefited from it even on the straights. In Sochi and Istanbul this was possible, so much so that they even earned seven tenths on the straights ”.
Already on the eve of the United States Grand Prix, Horner’s counterpart to Mercedes, Toto Wolff, had not expressed particular concerns about the FIA investigations, commented on the move of the rivals on this matter: “As long as they want to waste their energy on something like this, it can only be good for us”. The same Federation then concluded by emphasizing the technical regularity of the Silver Arrows. However, just before the green light came on on the Austin weekend, the reigning champion team had put one in place modification to the bottom of their cars, explaining that this intervention had been applied for reasons of height of the cars, and not as a reaction to the requests made by Red Bull.
