British pop band Coldplay will use recycled batteries from the BMW i3 as a power source for their concert series around the new album ‘Music of the Spheres’.
The already dating from 2011 BMW i3 was a progressive car, with a bold exterior design, a clever interior concept and an electric powertrain. You can still order the MPV, with BMW giving you the choice between the regular version and the sportier i3s.

The recycled batteries from those BMW i3s are now being used as a power source for Coldplay’s new tour, where the battery packs will replace classic gas and diesel generators. Chris Martin, the British pop band’s frontman, talks about the first “the world’s first tourable, rechargeable show battery, which will allow us to power our concerts almost entirely from clean, renewable energy”.
Because those recycled BMW i3 batteries will be charged via solar panels and generators powered by hydrotreated vegetable oil. Coldplay also counts on a kinetic stadium floor and on the power of electric bicycles, so that concert visitors also contribute to charging the batteries. They also pay to listen to Coldplay’s music, on their new album ‘Music of the Spheres’.
