I do not like using the word comic and a graphic novel, because I do not consider that the comics, as I have always called them, need to be dignified by a denomination that sounds like something serious, that allows adults to read them without feeling that they are wasting their time … With kids. Make your hobby something respectable. Tebeo, in addition, is a beautiful word. And very ours. Why not use it?
It was adopted to designate the stories counted with drawings and through vignette sequences thanks to the magazine ‘TBO’, whose first issue was published on March 11, 1917. What was such an enigmatic name to? For some time he pointed out that he would be the acronym for the name and surnames of the Mallorcan Tomeu Bauzá Oller, since his editorial (Bauzá Editorial) was a member of the magazine. Some point out that it comes from the Latin voice ‘Thebaeus’ (originally from Thebes) and, others, to a phonetic representation of the ‘I see you’ phonetic, which would refer to the act of looking or observed.
But it seems that neither fans of anthroponymy, nor those of classical historiography, nor those of the hieroglyphs were in truth and the name of ‘TBO’, everything indicates, it was taken from a lyric work signed by Eduardo Montillos and Ángel Torres del Álamo, with music of the teacher Arturo Lapuerta, premiered on April 29, 1909 in the coliseum of the Madrid. “TBO Lyric Magazine in four or five pictures (consumer’s taste)”, prayed the cover of the libretto.
I am with Luis Alberto de Cuenca: the comic starts in bed, when a child is sick and devours them for hours
And the work was started with the busy day before the first issue of an imaginary newspaper: the TBO «Cheer up, gentlemen! To work, ”said the director. «Tomorrow the first number of TBO will come out and you have to show off. You already know that this will not be a vulgar newspaper. TBO comes to fill a void ».
And what if he filled it: ‘Tebeo’ became the voice that would designate a whole narrative medium. One that does not need to justify, or need to adopt foreigns to be designated, not even be claimed. At this point: they say that the comic appears in 1875, when the New Yorker World ‘at the Circus in Hogan’s Alley’. Others consider that in 1896, with ‘The Yellow Kid’ in the ‘The World’ of New York. There are those who move that beginning until the fourteenth century, with the Bible of Velislav, a manuscript that the Old Testament recounts through 747 illustrations (in 2009, Robert Crumb, the great author of the American Underground ‘, would publish his’ Genesis’).
I, who return to ‘Krazy Kat’ As a totemic comic every time something staggers around me and I believe in Herriman above all things, in this I am with Luis Alberto de Cuenca: the comic begins in bed, when a child is sick and devours them for hours. That is why I always give my little friends and the children of my big friends, because there always begins.
And someday, if nothing prevents it, the works of David Mazzucchelli, of Manu Larcenet, by Art Spiegelman, by Alison Bechdel, Chris Ware, Daniel Clows, Alan Moore, Frank Miller, Charles Burns, Julie Doucet or Posy Simmonds will fall into their hands. And Paco Roca, Max, Bartolomé Seguí, Pere Joan, Sergio Bleda and Miguel Gallardo.
And, hopefully, they will continue to call them comics. And they will remember that the first of all, between coughs and fevers, was one of Goscinny and Uderzo, and that we are in the year 50 before Jesus Christ. The whole Gaul is occupied by the Romans … all? No! A village populated by Gauls irreducible …
