Reader’s opinion|The role of welfare regions must be recognized in the national science and innovation policy debate as a significant part of R&D activities.
In an opinion piece (HS 18.5.) expressed concern that the role of welfare regions as a booster of the health sector’s growth potential remains underutilized and that their R&D activities are only seen as expenses.
The health sector played a significant role during the chancellors’ trip to Eastern Finland. Two of the four business targets were healthcare companies: Marginum and FinVector. Both are good examples of how Finnish research can be successfully commercialized internationally.
Petteri Orpon (kok) government program recognizes the potential of social and health care as a promoter of the growth of health technology. The aim of the research, development and innovation program in the field of health and well-being is to make Finland an internationally known and attractive investment destination in the field of health and well-being.
The program solves the challenges related to social security data in such a way that the research done in Finland is strengthened and the utilization of the data is successful. The program focuses on actions that support the role of well-being areas in tki themes. The regions hope that the guidance and funding of R&D activities would be examined from the perspective of the prerequisites for growth. Incentives based on research data, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness are needed to motivate welfare regions to invest in R&D activities.
The innovation culture of welfare regions must be promoted with new solutions and technologies, including joint development with, for example, companies. This is important in creating solutions for needs-based challenges and research-based impact assessment.
The potential of the health technology and well-being sector must not be underestimated, and the role of well-being areas must be recognized in the national science and innovation policy debate as a significant part of R&D activities.
