Reader’s opinion|The best childhood memories don’t always need a wonderful and wonderful place from an adult’s point of view.
Tiina Rajamäki wrote in his column about the lack of wow playgrounds in the capital (HS 20.5.). The writing sadly reflects the current world of values, where only new, fine and built things matter. I disagree, because there are already wow experiences for children in Helsinki. Such a thing is called a nearby forest.
The corona shutdown showed the importance of nearby forests. When it was not possible to meet friends, the offspring of our family headed to the forest to build huts and enjoy everything that nature can offer them. And they had a great time. Almost everything needed to build the huts was found in the forest, time passed and experiences were born. It wouldn’t even have been possible to pack climbing frames and swings into the playground.
Unfortunately, many such nearby forests have been threatened by construction. Houses and maybe playgrounds instead of trees and rocks. How shortsighted that is! I don’t deny that the Parade Ground in the heart of Helsinki should have a wonderful playground, but next to it we should remember that, from the adults’ point of view, we don’t always need a wonderful and wonderful place for the best childhood memories. Nature is enough. We still have that and we have to protect it.
