A Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul reported at 12pm this Saturday (May 4, 2024) that the State had 57 deaths due to the rains. Another 67 people remain missing. There are still 9,581 people in shelters and 32,640 homeless. In total, more than 400,000 were affected.
The storms in the region began on Sunday (28 March). The governor Eduardo Leite (PSDB) declared a state of public calamity on Wednesday (May 1). The president’s government Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) acknowledged the situation on Thursday (May 2).
