“Lords, ladies and gentlemen.
“In this moment of deepest pain to announce the death of my beloved mother the Queen.
“I know how much you, ladies and gentlemen, and the entire nation, and I must say that the entire world, sympathizes with me for the irreparable loss that we all suffer. It is of great comfort to know of the sympathy expressed by so many for my sister and brothers and that such immense affection and support is extended to our entire family in our loss.
“To all of us as a family, to this kingdom and to the family of nations of which we are a part, my mother set an example of a life dedicated to service.
“My mother’s reign was unparalleled in its duration, its dedication and its devotion. Even at this moment, when we are in mourning, we thank you for this life of so much faith.
“I am keenly aware of this great heritage and of the burdensome duties and responsibilities of sovereignty now incumbent upon me. In assuming these responsibilities, I must strive to follow the inspiring example set before me in upholding constitutional government and seeking the peace, harmony and prosperity of the peoples of these islands and of the Commonwealth kingdoms and territories throughout the world.
“In this purpose, I know that I will be sustained by the affection and loyalty of the peoples whose sovereignty I am called to follow, and that in the discharge of these duties I will be guided by the council of their elected Parliaments. In all of this, I am deeply encouraged by the constant support of my beloved wife.
“I take this opportunity to confirm my desire and intention to continue the tradition of handing over hereditary revenues, including Crown assets, to the government for the benefit of all and in exchange for the sovereign grant that supports my official functions as head of state and head of nation.
“And in carrying out the heavy task entrusted to me and to which I now dedicate the rest of my life, I ask for the guidance and help of Almighty God.”
