The controversy and outrage over the non-realization of the Women’s League in the second semester in Colombia continues, especially after the great performance of the Colombian National Team in the Copa América, by reaching the subtitle.
Jesurun defends himself
The president of the Colombian Football Federation, Ramón Jesurúnone of the great ones pointed out in the critics, defended himself once again.
Regarding the balance in the Cup, he mentioned: “It was the result of a great effort. I think that the country was very happy, the truth is that we are honored to have achieved the main objective: to be in the World Cup and the Olympic Games in Paris 2024. More importantly, Conmebol has given us the confidence to host another tournament of such importance, as they also gave it to us next year for the U-20 men’s tournament”, he said in statements to Blu Radio’s Sports Blog.
On the other hand, Jesurún was clear about what happened before it was decided not to carry out the Women’s League II. He assured that the Federation made every effort.
“It is an issue that belongs to Dimayor, she is in charge within the FCF of organizing all professional competitions. At the beginning of this year, the programming of the Women’s League was made and it was said at that time that it would be six months. People suddenly don’t remember. A qualifying league was made with two quotas for the Women’s Copa Libertadores and they were already delivered with the grand final that took place between Cali and América, ”she clarified.
This means, as Jesurún explained, that the Federation is “the highest authority in Colombia” and the official competitions are carried out by Dimayor, as well as the Difútbol fans. “Both have been doing very good work, the effort is great, but resources are needed,” he argued.
“For this second semester, more because of the boom of hosting the Copa América, efforts were made and the money was obtained to organize the League (own resources from Dimayor, the Federation and the Ministry itself), but unfortunately the clubs that participating did not go beyond a minuscule number of intentions to do so because they did not have in their budget the possibility of a League in the second semester”, he added.
“Nor can it be ignored that women’s soccer in the world is something incipient, something that is growing rapidly, but we have not been able to position the commercial issue around it. We have tried since the beginning of the Women’s League, to find some good sponsors, but we have not succeeded. We are in that task and we will achieve it sooner or later. I have no doubt that we are going to have a standardized Women’s League throughout the year, hopefully starting in 2023,” he concluded.
