The storm left parts of the capital flooded and felled 200 trees; Ibirapuera Park marquee fell and injured 4 people
The city of São Paulo recorded intense rain and strong winds on Monday afternoon (8.Jan.2024). A 58-year-old man died after being hit by a tree that fell due to the force of the winds in Itupeva, a municipality about 70 km from the capital of São Paulo. He was hit in the get out of the car to open the garage door.
Residents were left without electricity again in different parts of the city. In note (complete– PDF – 59 kB), the city hall, under the management of Ricardo Nunes (MDB), stated that the city has 50 trees over the electrical wiring waiting for Enel to be removed.
“To date, there is no forecast for Enel, the concessionaire responsible for supplying energy in the capital. Without the electricity being turned off by the concessionaire, it will be impossible for City Hall teams to work on the streets, intensifying the removal of fallen trees to alleviate inconveniences,” states.
In response (complete– PDF – 42 kB), Enel did not inform the number of affected addresses. Just said which restored power to approximately 70% of customers whose supply was impacted by the recent rains.
Falling trees and branches damaged sections of the electrical network. The company states that the most affected municipalities in the concession area were São Paulo and Santo André. In the capital of São Paulo, Moema, Vila Nova Conceição, Jardim Paulista, Planalto Paulista, Jabaquara, Vila Mariana, Pedreira, Pirituba, Centro and Itaquera were the most affected neighborhoods.
“The company reinforced its action plan with an increase in teams in the field and remote maneuvers via a remote control system to minimize the impact on customers. The company's technicians have been working since yesterday afternoon, including during the early hours of the morning, to rebuild the damaged sections of the distribution network. Around 800 teams will continue working throughout the day to restore power for everyone.”
Damage
The storm caused several points of flooding. According to Civil defensealmost 200 calls for falling trees were recorded in the capital alone, 11 calls for floods and flooding and no calls for landslides or collapses.
Ibirapuera Park, in the south zone, is temporarily closed after part of a metal structure that was in the park's marquee fell. Firefighters rescued 4 people who were injured and took them to Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein.
