Heavy rains have hit the entire territory of São Paulo throughout this weekend and, since Thursday, 18, 15 municipalities have been “severely affected”, according to the State Civil Defense bulletin released this Sunday, 21. In total, 182 trees fell , 27 power poles were damaged, eight properties were roofed, seven people were injured, four died, 492 were left homeless and 47 displaced until this morning.
Only between the morning of Saturday, the 20th, and this Sunday, the 21st, were recorded rainfall accumulations varying between 44 and 131 millimeters per municipality, states the state Civil Defense. According to data from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), the average normal rainfall for the entire month of January in the capital of São Paulo, for example, is 292 mm.
Some of the cities that had the highest volume of rain in the period were, according to the state Civil Defense:
– Peruíbe: 131mm;
– Sorocaba: 117mm;
– Itanhaém: 101mm;
– Apiaí: 93mm;
– Itariri: 84mm;
– Mairinque: 81mm;
– Ibiúna: 78mm.
The rains have also been accompanied by lightning, which caused a death in Praia Grande, on the south coast of the state, on Saturday. A 60-year-old woman died on the beach after being hit by electrical discharge. In addition to her, seven more people were affected and rescued in health units and/or by the Fire Department and Samu team on the beach itself.
The other three deaths occurred in Limeira, in the interior, where a mother and daughter drowned while trying to save a car that was being swept away by the flood, and in Sorocaba, where a 74-year-old woman was unable to get out of the car when the water level rose. on the avenue he was passing by.
In Sorocaba, the Children's Cancer Research and Assistance Group Hospital (GPACI), a reference in the region for treatment against the disease, was heavily affected. There was a loss of equipment, high-cost medicines, medical supplies, food and hygiene products. No patients or staff were injured.
Civil Defense says that, in Socorro, streams and the Rio do Peixe overflowed, flooding around 150 properties and dozens of streets. “The city hall set up an emergency shelter in the sports hall. The State Civil Defense sent 600 items of humanitarian aid to the city. The truck should arrive there at 6pm”, states the agency.
“The municipality’s Services Department is cleaning the streets and collecting trash on the sidewalks. Affected residents are cleaning their homes. There are no records of victims and no destruction of public equipment.”
Something similar happened in Pinhalzinho: there was an overflow of the Cachoeirinha River, affecting three properties in the neighborhood of the same name and leaving 12 people homeless (when they lose their home, but have the home of family or friends to shelter in). “To date, there is no record of any injured or missing person,” the agency states.
In Votorantim, at least two homes were hit. Six people were left homeless (when they lose their home and have nowhere to go) and were taken to the Parque Bela Vista Community Center. Another six were left homeless and sent to their family homes.
On the coast, Peruíbe had tree falls and flooding in the neighborhoods of Ribamar, Caraguava, Arpoador 1 and 2, Dos Prados, Vila Herminda and Estância dos Eucaliptos. Two homes were taken by water, but no injuries were reported.
The cold front is expected to continue moving along the coast of the State of São Paulo this Sunday. “It still causes conditions for precipitation at any time of the day, especially in the east,” says the State Civil Defense.
