The cities of São Luiz do Paraitinga and Paraibuna, in the Vale do Paraíba region, in the State of São Paulo, recorded flooding and landslides this Saturday, the 24th, caused by the heavy rain that hits the region. In total, there are 18 homeless people in Paraitinga, according to the state Civil Defense. No one has been injured so far.
According to the state Civil Defense, 200 properties were affected by flooding in São Luiz de Paraitinga, affecting around 600 people – 18 were left homeless. The Nelson Ferreira Pinto Highway (SP-153), in the section that passes through the city, was closed for around 12 hours yesterday, the 23rd, but is now open.
The municipal Civil Defense reported that the Paraitinga River reached its peak at 1:30 am this Saturday, the 24th, with a height 5.30 meters higher than the channel. It then stabilized for a few hours and began to slowly decrease. During the afternoon, it was 5.06 meters above the gutter and continued to fall.
In Paraibuna, there were bridge collapses, flooding of roads and landslides. Part of the city was covered in mud. No one was left homeless. “Teams continue to inspect and monitor, counting the losses”, says the Civil Defense of the State of São Paulo.
The ministry also says that it is providing support to residents of both cities. Cleaning kits and essential items were provided to affected families.
