Mexico. After working behind the camera on the series ‘Pancho Villa: The Centaur of the North‘, director Rafael Lara returns to cinema and the comedy genre with the film ‘family son‘, which is presented in the 39th Guadalajara International Film Festival. The filmmaker himself calls this production not only a fresh proposal, but also a necessary film.
“Comedy cinema is still misunderstood, especially in the Latin American environment, how to tell jokes, and I think that good comedy must be very serious, it must talk about transcendent things that matter to us. ‘Hijo de familia’ is precisely inserted in that logic,” he says about the new film.

cool story
‘family son‘ presents Bobby (Ianis Guerrero), a young man from Guadalajara who is over 30 years old and apparently has “everything” that someone of his generation would want: he is young, good-looking, gallant, carefree, with a good job and financial stability. However, he has a “small” defect: he still lives in his parents’ house and has no intention of leaving it. But when his sick grandmother comes to live in his house, Bobby is forced to “leave the nest” and confront the responsibilities of being an adult.
The film already had its world premiere on FICG, where the cast and production witnessed how “endearing” the story was for the public. “People, from the first minute, start laughing, but after a while they even shed a little tear. I think we get along very well with a quality audiovisual product, very careful as I always like to do things; and second, a product that communicates, that connects with the viewer, without being complacent. I think ‘Son of a Family’ is a very rounded film,” he reflects. Laura.
The filmmaker, who has already worked in the comedy genre with films such as ‘Red Lips’ or ‘Size Does Matter’, highlights that the film addresses “the importance of the family environment, without being moralistic” and can connect with young people, millennials and older adults. “It is a story that talks about how important it is to have unity in the family with parents, with grandparents, which are values worth recovering, without giving life lessons to anyone. I am leaving reflections that are valuable, at the same time as entertaining”.
In addition to starring in the film, Ianis Guerrero I also function as a writer, with whom Rafael Lara He managed to make a great team, all thanks to the invitation of producer Óscar Ramírez.
“When Oscar asked me to direct this film, I told him that everything I direct is written by me and in this case he asked me to consider the project. I read Ianis’ script, I thought it had a very endearing story, however I needed to give him a seal so that he would trust my vision. Ianis accepted, he is an extremely talented and sensitive actor, but also a great human being, and left the project under my direction.”
Together with the scriptwriter Pancho Rodriguez was in charge of rewriting the text and they made a script that will adapt to the vision of Laura, resulting in a “very organic” work. “Pancho contributed a lot of local humor. It is very important to emphasize that ‘family son‘Not only is it a very endearing comedy, but it is also a filmic tribute, specifically to Guadalajara,” he shares.
Precisely, ‘family son‘is part of the official section of the Made in Jalisco Competition of the FICG and Rafael Lara applauds “the sensitivity” of the Jalisco government for supporting the production of the seventh art in recent years and in this way continuing to tell other narratives and perspectives outside the center of the country.
“I am very pleased to be part of this movement that has made Jalisco not the future but the present of Mexican cinema. For decades we lived very centralized in the fact that what does not happen in Mexico City did not happen. The efforts that have been made “They are recently bearing fruit and we can see it not only in the growth in quantity in local production in Jalisco and Guadalajara, specifically, but also in their quality.”

“Every cinematographic or artistic competition will inherently have a certain degree of injustice or inequity, because in the end art is still a subjective matter. Whoever sees it or judges it will determine if they like this or that film and that does not It necessarily detracts from the films that do not end up being the winners. For me, film festivals fulfill an even more important function, which is to show a melting pot of all those colors that we different filmmakers are, with different voices, with different styles. It is important that there is space for everyone to express themselves, that the public decides which one they identify with most,” says Lara.
“I personally never think about competing with anyone, other than myself. Any other competition is going to be very subjective, it is going to depend on many factors and I do not control that. What I can do is try to be the best version of myself.” myself and that the best version of Rafa Lara is the one seen on the screen and specifically in the last film he has made and in this case it is ‘family son‘, Add.
