Pedrosa, return to be remembered
The short race in Jerez provided a surprise first career podium in a Sprint for Dani Pedrosa, on track this weekend in Spain as a wild-card for the KTM team. The Spanish veteran, in front of his home crowd, was able to stay on his feet in an authentic elimination raceconditioned above all by the damp track in some sections which played tricks on most of the riders.
Pedrosa, despite not having the speed of the top riders, took advantage of other people's mistakes and succeeded played third place in the sprint with Fabio Quartararo. The Yamaha centaur prevailed on the track, but then it was penalized 8 seconds for irregular tire pressure. This allowed Pedrosa to overtake him in the standings and earn an unexpected bronze medal for the Sprint.
Duel for the podium
It was Quartararo himself who rewarded the #26 of the KTM, in a fun scene organized in the Jerez paddock. The two champions also had the opportunity to discuss the spectacular battle on the track that saw them pitted against each other in the final laps. Here Pedrosa also confessed to his Yamaha rival that he hadn't understood that their battle was actually for the podium, given that all the other 'big names' had fallen in front of them.
“At the last corner I didn't know we were third and fourth – said the Spaniard – I thought we were like fifth and sixth or sixth and seventh and I said to myself 'oh well, it doesn't matter'. Then I got to the pits and they told me 'you came fourth for a very short time'. And I said to myself 'shit!'“. In the end, somehow, the third step of the podium arrived anyway.
