Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset focuses on artificial intelligence, promises mobile gaming sessions like never before and much more.
After a long wait and months of previews, at the Snapdragon 2023 Summit in Hawaii, Qualcomm finally presented its long-awaited Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
As expected, in the fate of this SoC there is the prospect of establish itself as the preferred choice for high-end devicesfrom traditional to foldable.
Chris Patrick, Senior VP of Qualcomm, defined Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 as a “champion of integrated intelligence”a high-performance chip that paves the way for new experiences and challenges competitors such as Google’s Tensor G3 in the field of artificial intelligence.
However, the main competition for Qualcomm in this sector always remains MediaTek Dimensity 9300, which will launch in November.
Close comparisons based on benchmarks and declared specifications await us on the horizon.
Gaming performance never seen before
Qualcomm has made a bold move with this new SoC, which adopts an architecture in which only two cores handle the least power-intensive operations, operating at maximum frequencies of 2.3 GHz to save power.
At the same time, well five mid-range cores, with clock frequencies up to 3.2 GHz were included.
This represents a significant change from its predecessor, the 8 Gen 2, over which Qualcomm claims it achieved a 20% increase in CPU efficiency.
All this was achieved by still using the 4 nanometer manufacturing process, without moving to 3 nanometers, as Apple did with its A17 Pro.
It will be interesting to see how smartphone manufacturers will exploit this computing power and also evaluate the performance of the new one Adreno GPU, which is estimated to double frame rates. By connecting to an external display, it will even be possible to play with a frequency of 240 FPS.
It is also the first chipset to natively integrate support for Unreal Engine 5.
It is then expected that Snapdragon Game Super ResolutionQualcomm’s answer to upscaling technologies like NVIDIA’s DLSS and Apple’s MetalFX, will help games run on supported displays at up to 8K resolution.
Champion of Artificial Intelligence
The presentation was accompanied by a significant emphasis on the chipset’s AI Engine, which includes Kryo CPU, Adreno GPU, RAM memory with support up to LPDDR5x at 4.8 GHz, Hexagon NPU with the Meta Llama 2 large language model for AI-powered assistants.
Qualcomm has always built on its AI capabilities, with native support for technologies like Stable Diffusion and Llama.
Specifications include 24GB of RAM to handle the AI models supported by the SoC, which can have up to 10 billion parameters.
It should be especially noted that Stable Diffusion, recognized as the fastest in the world, is capable of generating an image in less than a second.
The new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will soon be available on devices from various manufacturers, including ASUS, Honor, iQOO, Meizu, Nio, Nubia, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Redmi, Redmagic, Sony, Vivo, Xiaomi and ZTE.
We expect several devices featuring the chipset to establish themselves as some of the best choices among next year’s phones.
