Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees recognizing Zaporozhye and Kherson regions as independent territories. The documents were published on September 30 on the Internet portal of legal information.
The Russian leader made the appropriate decision, taking into account the will of the people in the referendums held in these liberated regions.
Besides, in decree On the recognition of the Kherson region, the conformity of this resolution with the generally accepted principles and norms of international law, as well as confirmation of the principle of equality and self-determination of peoples, enshrined in the UN Charter, is noted.
This decree, like decree on the recognition of the Zaporozhye region, shall enter into force from the date of signing.
On September 30, the ceremony of signing agreements on the entry of new territories into Russia will be held at the Grand Kremlin Palace. In this regard, Russian President Vladimir Putin will deliver a voluminous speech.
In the period from 23 to 27 September, residents of the liberated territories voted in referendums on the issue of joining the Russian Federation. According to the results of processing 100% of ballots, 99.23% of citizens voted for the accession of the DPR to the Russian Federation. In the LPR, 98.42% of citizens voted for integration with the Russian Federation, in the Kherson region – 87.05%, and in the Zaporozhye region – 93.11%.
As it became known the next day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asked the Turkish authorities to influence Russia following the results of the past referendums in the Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics (LPR and DPR), as well as in Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.
On February 24, Russia launched a special operation to protect Donbass. The decision was made against the backdrop of the aggravated situation in the region due to increased shelling by Ukrainian troops.
