These are the last days of Jim Ryan at PlayStation and the former CEO of the company has now participated in a Official PlayStation Podcast in which he discussed various topics with the hosts. In the midst of a decades-long speech, Ryan revealed that PS2 has sold 160 million units.
When asked what the 2000s bring to mind, Ryan responded, “The 2000s? I would say 160 million, which is the number of PS2s sold. An important point of reference.”
The latest update that we had received on PlayStation 2 sales reported 159 million units sold. Sony officially reported selling 150 million units in 2011, but the PS2 remained in production for another two years. Analyst Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners later said that sales rose to 155.1 million in March 2012.
“A total of 16.5 million PS3 and PS2 units were shipped in the fiscal year ending March 2013,” he said Ahmad in 2018. “The PS2 was still shipping at this time, so the information we're missing is how many units were PS2s and how many were PS3s. Using the PS3's 80 million unit sales as a guide, you can work backwards and eventually figure out that sales of PS2 [da marzo 2012 fino alla fine della sua produzione] they must have been close to 4 million.”
The best-selling consoles in the world
PlayStation 2 has dominated the rankings for some time best-selling consoles of all time.
With 160 million units sold, the closest gaming device in the rankings is the Nintendo DS with 154.02 million units sold. Nintendo Switch follows with 139.36 million units sold. However, it should be remembered that the Switch is still in production as Nintendo's flagship console. We're all waiting for a new platform to arrive, but Switch sales won't stop immediately.
