Princess Leonor begins to stand out alone and does so dressed in a cadet lady’s gala uniform, in a nod to her time at the General Military Academy (The General) from Zaragoza. This Tuesday in this city, the heir to the throne received the Gold Medal of Aragon and the Medal of the Cortes, the two highest distinctions of the autonomous community, and she has also been named adopted daughter of Zaragoza. The long morning of events for the heir to the throne has been full of symbolism due to the setting of the decorations – the Aljafería Palace, the Town Hall and the Seo del Salvador – but also due to the absence of her parents, Felipe VI and Letizia Ortiz. , who have given maximum prominence to their first-born daughter in what was her first speech without the presence of the Kings.
This Tuesday’s events mark Leonor’s final stage in The General, where within five weeks he will graduate and receive his office as an ensign in the Army. “I miss you already,” the princess said in her speech in a solemn Seo, the place where the kings of Aragon were traditionally crowned. Completing the day there, Leonor has written in the Honor book, “is a privilege and an honor” that she will “always remember.” The ceremonies, on which La Zarzuela and the regional authorities have been working together for weeks, are loaded with symbolism and historical references of the country of which Leonor is called to be the future queen and head of state. “I can tell you that what I have experienced here far exceeds what she thought 10 months ago.” [cuando ingresó en la Academia]. In Zaragoza, in Aragon, I have felt at home, welcomed and accompanied in a land that will always be part of my life,” said the Princess of Asturias in the Seo before more than 100 guests, among whom were the highest authorities. —past and current—of Aragon.
At 10:30, Leonor went to the historic Aljafería Fortress Palace – it was used as the headquarters of the Holy Office (Inquisition), it was the palace of the Catholic Monarchs and currently houses the headquarters of the historic Cortes of Aragon -, where she received with a very smiling the medal of the Cortes. This award rewards the work of natural or legal persons, or organizations, centers or groups with public and recognized social identity, in the defense of Aragonese values and identity. The Cortes wanted to show their “affection” to the Princess of Asturias, after her stay in Zaragoza for her military training, and convey to her the “feeling of loyalty and respect towards the Crown and towards the ideal of service that this institution symbolizes.” . Leonor continues, therefore, with another tradition, since her father was the first to be awarded this medal by the Aragonese Parliament in 1986. “We have talked a lot about it these days,” said the princess, who added that following in the footsteps of Her father means a lot to her.
Shortly after, Leonor went to the Zaragoza City Council, where she was named the city’s adopted daughter. “Thank you very much for granting me the Medal of the Cortes, the Medal of Aragon and I am also very grateful that you have granted me the title of Adoptive Daughter of Zaragoza, a city that I know and love more after living these months here and receiving the affection of its citizens”, the princess has written in the Book of Honor of the City Council. Outside, in the heart of the Plaza de El Pilar, the newly decorated woman greeted the hundreds of people who had come to see her pass on her 300-meter walk to the Seo del Salvador – which was a Roman forum, a mosque and now a cathedral. The Aragonese capital had already made a gesture towards the heir to the throne by announcing that, with the votes in favor of the PP and Vox and the abstention of the PSOE, the auditorium will change its current name (Zaragoza Auditorium) to the Princesa Leonor Auditorium.
The princess, who is in the last phase of military training for the Army in The General, He wanted to get personally involved in this Tuesday’s events. “She is very interested in everything going well,” they said days ago from La Zarzuela. Today has been a hectic day, with three events in a row in which for the first time the princess – in the gala uniform of a lady cadet – has given a speech without the presence of her parents, Felipe VI – who has commitments in Madrid― and Letizia Ortiz. Nor has her sister, Infanta Sofía, who now studies at the UWC Atlantic College in Wales (United Kingdom), attended, as the princess did until last summer. Yes, there was Camilo Villarino, head of the King’s House, and all the authorities of the autonomous community, as well as the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles.

End of stage in San Gregorio
Lady cadet Borbón Ortiz’s stay at the San Gregorio training center is about to end: at the beginning of July she will receive the position of second lieutenant of the Army. During the event at the Seo, Leonor wanted to pay tribute to her time in The General: “Here I have met young people of my generation and I have lived with them. I assure you that what we experience while we train at the Academy unites us forever and makes us mature and grow.”
His military training did not end, however, in Zaragoza. It is planned that in the summer the princess will enter the Marín base (Pontevedra) to begin her training with the Navy. In January 2025 she will embark on the training ship Juan Sebastian Elcano, where he will live with other colleagues for about four months and visit different countries. Finally, Leonor will travel to San Javier (Murcia) to complete her military training in the Air and Space Army.
Once the military training is completed, the princess will begin her university career which, predictably, will be combined with institutional events. Leonor came of age last October and little by little she is assuming the daily work of representing the King’s House that for now is only carried out by Felipe VI, Letizia Ortiz and, from time to time, the queen emeritus, Sofía .
