Bib and red hat with the newspaper logo, Prince William has become a “newsboy” for charity, selling copies of “Big Issue” on the street in London, a charity publication that supports the unemployed and homeless. The Duke of Cambridge initially went unnoticed, but a man spotted him from afar as a possible celebrity and took a picture of him. The future king then approached him, asking him if he would like to buy a copy of Big Issue. The man shielded himself by saying he had no coins, but the prince immediately pulled out a machine for electronic payments.
The retired policeman Matthew Gardner, brother-in-law of the man who noticed the prince, told the skit on social media, spreading the photo of William in a salesman’s uniform. “What an honor to have a private moment with the future king, who humbly worked behind the scenes to help those in need. These silent gestures often go unnoticed,” he commented. Gardner was also amused by William’s promptness in proposing payment by credit card. “Priceless or rather princely”, he commented, with a play on words between “priceless” and “princely”.
Big Issue is a British charity. Among its main activities is the sale of a newspaper on the street, entrusted to the homeless and the unemployed, who can thus earn a living. Since 1991, Big Issue has employed 92,000 salespeople. Over 83,000 copies are sold every week.
