crisis italyItalian Prime Minister Draghi is still submitting his resignation after three coalition parties have again indirectly lost confidence in him tonight. He may have won the confidence vote in the senate, but three of his governing parties abstained. Draghi cannot work that way, he thinks, and so that’s enough.
,,Siete pronti?” ‘Are you ready?’ In his speech to the Italian Senate this morning, Prime Minister Draghi asked for support from his coalition partners without further ado. “Are you ready to rebuild the relationship of trust?” Not so.
Even though 95 of the 133 senators voted in a confidence vote in favor of continuing the Draghi government, confidence is gone. Three of the main parties in his cabinet dropped the troubled prime minister. The Italian press writes that Prime Minister Draghi, after his speech in the Chamber on Thursday morning, will go to the president to offer his resignation.
The Five Star Movement left Draghi, just like last Thursday, in the lurch. At the time, ‘the Grillini’ would not agree to Draghi’s plan to ease the pain of rising inflation and the energy crisis. Today, the senators of the Five Star Movement abstained again.
death blow
But it was the centre-right lega and Forza Italia bloc that gave the draghi government the final death blow. Those two parties were willing to vote for the Draghi government to move forward, but on one condition: without the Five Star Movement.
Draghi refused to comply with yet another ultimatum from one of the coalition parties and asked for a confidence vote for another solution to the deadlock. Christian Democrat Pierferdinando Casini asked the Senate to unconditionally support the prime minister in his solution to the crisis.
Obligations
Senator Casini reminded his colleagues of the obligations that the Italian government must fulfill in the coming months, such as spending the European corona funds, the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis, where stability is of great importance. It was to no avail, because Lega and Forza Italia also abstained from voting.
In his speech in the Senate this morning, Prime Minister Draghi hinted that he still wanted to continue, possibly even without the support of the Five Star Movement. But on his condition: there had to be clear and concrete support. “For a prime minister who has never presented himself before his constituents, great confidence in parliament is fundamental.”
