More than ten largest Russian producers of sausages and sausages have warned retailers about a 7-20 percent rise in prices from late October to early November. About it report Izvestia citing reports from representatives of retail chains.
The increase in the cost of meat products is associated with an increase in production costs, in particular, with an increase in the price of packaging, detergents, egg melange and meat itself. According to the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies (IKAR), the highest prices for all types of meat reached in August-September.
Most of all, chicken has risen in price – by 50 percent compared to the same period last year, beef has risen in price by 11 percent, and pork – by 29 percent, the newspaper writes.
Earlier, the head of the executive committee of the National Meat Association, Sergei Yushin, noted a serious crisis in the country’s agricultural sector, caused by a staff shortage due to low wages and other factors. Livestock, for example, he said, suffered financial losses due to animal diseases such as African swine fever and avian flu. Manufacturers are trying to curb the rise in prices even against such an unfavorable background, thanks to which the industry remains one of the most stable. Yushin associates the recent jump in prices with “stressful purchases” – meat processing plants are already starting to prepare for New Year’s sales and are stocking up on raw materials for the production of delicacies.
The Ministry of Agriculture of Russia reported that a set of measures is being taken to stabilize the situation. In particular, the allocation of ten billion rubles to meat processors as compensation for part of the cost of purchasing feed. The import of the feed base – soybeans and soybean meal – has been extended for a year. Livestock breeders have access to preferential loans for the purchase of grain, as well as investment loans for the construction and modernization of facilities, the ministry said.
In July, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that it is necessary to more actively include relevant ministries and departments, as well as representatives of the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) in the work on food price control, which is being carried out by the United Russia party and the country’s government.
Earlier it became known that the rise in food prices in Russia broke a five-year record, updating the maximum since September 2016, when inflation was 6.4 percent.
Compared to the previous month, consumer prices in June as a whole increased by 0.69 percent, food prices increased by 0.64 percent over this period and by 7.9 percent over the year, and non-food products – by 0.68 percent against May and by 7.04 percent at an annual level. The cost of services increased by 0.76 percent in monthly terms, and in annual terms – by 3.95 percent.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), world food prices in August 2021 rose 33 percent from last year, breaking a record in 60 years. The main reason was the increase in the cost of vegetable oil, grain crops and meat.
The jump in prices was also helped by extreme weather conditions caused by global warming, with many countries experiencing unprecedented droughts. The active recovery of economies after the pandemic has increased the cost of shipping and fertilizers and disrupted supply chains. In addition, many countries faced labor shortages following the cancellation of the lockdown. Due to the depletion of gold and foreign exchange reserves, a number of states began to import fewer products.
