President Mohamed Idriss Déby of Chad has pardoned 380 imprisoned members of the rebel Front for Change and Accord, in a gesture of peace.
Deby became president in 2021 after his father, Idriss Deby, was killed on the battlefield during his forces’ battles with Chadian rebels.
Deby then held peace talks with several rebel groups. But the “Change and Reconciliation Front” did not participate in those talks and insisted that the transitional authorities offer gestures for peace, including the release of its members.
Deby announced, in a decree, a list of the names of the front members who had been pardoned. The document bore the date of yesterday, Friday, but it was issued today, Saturday.
