French President Emmanuel Macron was officially sworn in for his second term today. He promised to build ‘a stronger France’ in the coming years.
The ceremony was attended by several hundred guests, including his wife Brigitte and the only two living former presidents of France, François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy. Both ex-presidents served only one term. Macron is the first French president to be re-elected in 20 years.
Although Macron has already been sworn in, his second term will not officially begin until May 13. On that day, his first five-year term of office expires.
Less support than five years ago
Macron was re-elected almost two weeks ago in the second round of the French presidential election. He defeated the far right Marine Le Pen, whose election he also won in 2017. He received less support from voters than five years ago.
Macron has changed the name of his party La République en marche to Renaissance this week. With this he wants to appeal to a wider group in society in the run-up to the French parliamentary elections, which will take place in June.
