Pregliasco: “Cold season is starting, not yet flu time”

With the drop in temperatures in recent days “we are in fact in an initial phase of the winter season”. It’s “time for colds and flu-like syndromes. But not yet flu season”. The virologist Fabrizio Pregliasco paints a picture of the ailments arriving with the first signs of cold weather along the peninsula for Adnkronos Salute.

“Right now there are ‘cousin’ respiratory viruses in circulation – adenovirus, rhinovirus, non-covid coronavirus – which have less severe clinical manifestations than the flu. They give rise to what will be the real flu season. The real flu, in fact , occurs when the temperature is low for a prolonged period of time. We therefore do not know when, in the case of a winter with variability and temperature changes, the ‘cousin’ viruses will be more active, but not so much. , and if instead the cold becomes more intense and prolonged the flu becomes the protagonist. And this generally happens in the central moments of the winter season”.

The viruses of this period, however, “should remind us that it is a good time for the anti-flu vaccination, starting in many Regions, but also the vaccination against Covid especially for the frail and elderly”, concludes Pregliasco.
