And “Energotom” stated that the station now obtains its electricity needs from diesel-powered generators.
The company wrote on the Telegram app: “Diesel generators started working automatically. The available diesel fuel supply is sufficient to run in this mode for 10 days.”
Zaporizhia nuclear power plant
- The station is located on the edge of the city of Enerhodar in southeastern Ukraine.
- The Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant has been designed since the times of the former Soviet Union and construction began in 1980.
- The Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant contains 6 reactors, called VVIR-1000 V-320 “hydro-hydro-capacity” reactors.
- The reactors are cooled by water and their neutrons are cooled down by water, and they work with uranium-235, whose half-life is estimated at more than 700 million years.
- Its sixth reactor was connected to the grid in 1995.
- It is the largest in Europe and one of the 10 largest power plants in the world.
- Each of the six Zaporizhia units has a net capacity of 950 megawatts, or a total of 5.7 gigawatts of electricity covering 20 percent of Ukraine’s electricity consumption.
The importance of the nuclear plant
- The nuclear plant has recently undergone modernization and a transition from Soviet technology in modern safety technologies to Western technologies, according to economic analyst George Adamund.
- Western reports: The nuclear plant used to use Russian nuclear fuel, but over the past years, the matter has changed, and it is now using American designed fuel produced by the “Westing House” company.
